The Robert LUCAS Foundation
Established Iowa City, iowa - 2014
Linden Springs was built by William Lucas, the son of Edward Lucas II. He raised his family there, including his son Robert Lucas, who became a Major General in the Ohio Militia, twice was elected the Governor of Ohio, and was appointed by President Harrison as the first Territorial governor of the Iowa Territory in 1838.
The current owners date the house circa 1779 which matches 19th century reporting on Governor Lucas that stated he was raised at Linden Spring. William Lucas and his family moved from the Shepherd's Town, Virginia area (now Shepherdstown, Jefferson County, West Virginia) in the early 19th Century. The family moved to Scioto County, Ohio near the town of Portsmouth and then began to settle throughout the area. One of William's sons founded the town of Lucasville, Scioto County, Ohio.
Linden Springs has been brought back to life by its current owners. The structure suffered a devastating fire in the 1970s that nearly destroyed the house, leaving only the stone structure intact. Thankful, the house was salvaged and returned to the majestic manor that is seen in the photos on this page.
